Ramana realized the Self at the age of 16 through a near death-experience in the year of 1896 . The realization of the I came through observing the dying body. The question arising "Who Am I? I am not the body, because it is decaying; not the mind because the brain will decay with the body; not the personality, nor the emotions for these also will vanish with death." What remained throughuot the experinece was the "I". He survived and remained continously aware of the "I" or the Self. Came to his guru the hill Arunachala Shiva, staying in caves and many years of deep meditation he became more and more available to serve the public eventually resulting in an ashram. The teaching is Self-enquiry, asking oneself Who Am I.
